Other patches of darkened older retouching can be seen in the light lower sky, and very probably in the dark lower left corner as well. In this area there are also some broader earlier retouchings, less immediately visible under UV but more dimly identifiable in the brownish streaks in the face and neck of the mother for instance, the chest and hand of the nearer child and the darker patches in the shoulder and hands of the child on the left and in his drapery. Other retouchings were concentrated around the figures. The last restoration concentrated in particular in retouching the open craquelure in various areas, and especially in the central foliage where three clusters of quite dense retouching can be seen under ultra violet light. This seems to have been largely in the final layer over the main free painterly brushwork of the picture.Įssentially there does not appear to have been any accidental damages at all, or flaking. There is widespread rather open premature craquelure mainly in the central sky and foliage. The present restoration is also not recent. This painting has an old stretcher and fairly old lining.
